Advent Calendar - Day 1

Happy Holidays!

Yep, through wind or rain or sleet or pandemic, the holidays are back. With a vengeance. Well, no. Hopefully NOT with a vengeance. We've had plenty of that already, thankyouverymuch.

No question this has been one weird-ass year. And I'll be honest, my cup is not one-hundred-percent brimming with holiday cheer. Not yet. But I'm getting there. Day by day, snowflake by snowflake, I'm working my way toward Joy. Because really, there is LOT to be joyful for this year. Even if you have to stop and think about it. Hard. Sometimes. Sometimes it's been hard. But we're still alive. If you're reading this, you're still alive, and that's something. A starting point? However, I know some of us have had a HORRENDOUS time of it. So maybe, just maybe, I can do something to help that.

Because that's really the goal of this little "Advent calendar." To say thank you to my readers and to share a little bit of holiday fun.

So here is the now (probably familiar) drill. Every morning through Christmas Day there will be something  posted to this blog to start your day off with a smile.

Maybe I'll share a favorite holiday song or a lovely photo or a vintage cartoon or a cocktail recipe or maybe I'll give something away. Speaking of giveaways. Last years giveaways did not go out until last week, so some of you may have puzzled over receiving some oddball holiday items from Ebay or Etsy. THAT WAS ME. THAT WAS ME SENDING YOU YOUR PRIZE IN TIME FOR **THIS** YEAR'S HOLIDAY! I know what you're thinking--I think it too--but after all, a surprise delayed is a...evenmore surprising surprise. Right? The good news is I've ALREADY bought my vintage goodies for this year, so the prizes will go out much, much faster.

Some days we'll have fiction--sometimes from me or maybe from one of our talented contributors. Other days we'll have art, a poem...one thing for sure, every day I'll have some small little "gift" for you to enjoy.

And if you're feeling creative or inspired and would like to contribute something to this year's calendar, that would be terrific! Don't be shy. You can reach me right through my website or on Facebook. You'd be very welcome!

Otherwise, there really is nothing for you to do but show up and enjoy--well, and to participate occasionally in so far as letting contributors know you're enjoying our efforts. (I'll be honest, it's a wee bit disappointing when we get 2800 views and only two comments. ;-))

But anyway, we're all doing the best we can. And the best I can do is this small attempt to say...

Thank You!

Thank you for your support throughout the year(s) whether it's through buying my books, contributing to my Patreon, writing reviews, sending me such kind letters, or simply spreading your enjoyment of my stories on social media. It all means so much. (And that's the truth.)

So here we go! Happy Holidays and may 2020 end with love, laughter and lots of happy surprises! Thank you--sincerely--for being here.

Comment below as to what you are most looking forward to this holiday season, and you'll be automatically entered into a drawing for a (vintage) small and kooky holiday-themed planter.

  1. I am looking forward to taking the whole week of Christmas off. I've never done that before. I will leave work on the Friday before Christmas, and not come back until the Monday after. I'm excited about that. We have decided as a family, that since we are fortunate enough to have kept our jobs and income, and since I'm a shopper and buy us anything we should need and more, we are going to donate our presents this Christmas. There are so many people who aren't as lucky, and I feel compelled to show the spirit of Christmas to them. I'm looking forward to that as well.

  2. I am looking forward to the solstice. I think about my ancestors, in the darkest part of the year, heading to Stonehenge or the Ring of Brodgar to celebrate the light that was coming.

  3. Good morning and Happy Holidays,Josh! This calendar is my smile every morning in December, so thank you, once again, for bringing joy to the season. As crazy as this year has been, (I am debating making murder hornet ornaments for my family) we need all the smiles we can get.

  4. Every year I always feel a little guilty when I buy Christmas presents online. As if avoiding the traffic, crowds and general craziness of shopping in the real world is kind of a cheat.

This year I am happy to do my part by only shopping online. I look forward to staying home, relaxing and being thankful that there is light at the end of this very dark and bleak tunnel. No guilt necessary. :)

I hope everyone's holidays should be as nice.

    1. LOL but yeah. I agree. Just making it through to the spring is going to be more than many will manage. It's one reason I'm determined to stay in the moment and focus on all that's right in the world.

  7. What am I looking forward to? How about a return to sanity.
Other than that, I am just going to be grateful for my health, my job, a roof over my head, and food on the table.

  8. What I'm really looking forward to this holiday season is staying home relaxing, unwinding during my Christmas break. Since it's pretty much mandatory to stay home, by golly, I'm going to make the most of it! :-) Hopefully I get to spend Christmas with my parents. That's my one and only Christmas wish, really.

  9. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Thank YOU so very much for all the enjoyment you have provided to us over this year and the past years.

I think we are all looking forward to the annual Advent Calendar.

  10. Weirdly enough, and absolutely typical of me, but this year for the first time in a while i'me excited about the holidays. I have lost contact (kind of on purpose)with my family, and have moved a lot and now I live in a different country, and continent, than everyone from my family. But it's all good! Lots of therapy, a cat, and a bunch of friends that are now family have somehow revived my christmas spirit. I just bought a hat that looks like a christmas tree and has LIGHTS ON IT, I'M UNSTOPPABLE. Hope everyone has great times this year for the holidays, you all deserve it! Also big excite about the Calendar, like every year

  14. We've started to do a winter walk every year. Yes, we should do it more often for our health, but we don't. For some reason we like to walk in the forest when it is cold and there is no one else around, when the trees have dropped their leaves, the birds have mostly flown south. There is a stillness. I'm looking forward to our winter walk.

  15. Thanks, Josh and contributors, for doing this every year. It really is fun. We may need lots more cocktail recipes this year! I'm looking forward to the actual Christmas holiday. After years of stress and chaos and ugliness and then this year of fear and sickness, I can definitely use some peace on Earth and goodwill toward men (and women!)

I'm really looking forward to go back to normal (new normal?) and be able to travel to visit my family as my parents, brothers and their families all live 1500 km from here :(

Luckily, I'll now have the Advent Calendar to begin every morning with a smile :D

  20. 1. Having the family snow-birds back in Florida for the winter/spring.
    2. A good friend just moved back to the area.
    3. Having a short vacation from school and my internship.
    4. Josh's advent calendar!

I'm just commenting for the record, though -- don't go putting me in the running for this prize! If I had a planter, then I'd have to plant something in it. I'm notorious for my black thumb.

  22. Not sure really what I'm "looking forward to"...I fear I may have organized my holidays so much there's not really any anticipation left (though there's little stress as well). Maybe our holiday movie/special collection--I went hunting last year for all the shows I loved as a kid (the Hanna-Barbera Years) and I've found pretty much all of them on DVD. Plus an awesome British film called "Nativity!" with Martin Freeman. And the Muppets, of course. :-)

  23. This has been such an odd year, I was despairing to think of anything - then I realized that so much of normal activities are external, going to see people, participating in events. This year, I’m looking forward to decorating my house (no more “why bother? I’m never home!) and sitting with myself. I’m hoping to get back to creativity and reading for pleasure, after several months of worry and inventing distractions.

Although the holidays are going to be more lowkey, I'm really looking forward to just spending time with my kids. 2020 will definitely be a year to remember and I'll be grateful to see it in the rearview mirror. Plus Trump will be out in January. If that's not a reason to celebrate then I don't know what is!

I can't imagine how I would have went through these 9 monthes of lockdown without reading and re-reading your marvelous stories. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and always be so kind to your readers. Thank you... Well, for being you. ^^
I look forward this advent calendar and I'll try to write a little something that I have on my mind, though writing in English may proove to be a challenge for a French speaker :P Maybe writing a Christmas short story about one of your "discarded" characters will bring me the merry I need :P
