My dad's all time favorite Christmas movie is Holiday Inn. (My mom's--for the record--is The Bishop's Wife and I do not mean the remake with poor old Whitney Houston.) And I never watch Holiday Inn without wondering what it is that appeals so strongly to my male parental unit. Is it just nostalgia for a times past? I don't know. It's an entertaining movie, mostly, and it's certainly a peek into the popular mindset of the 1940s. It's also the first appearance of Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas".
So...there you go.
Do you have a favorite Christmas movie?
Feeling sappy around the Holidays?! Yes, definitely. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have to confess that my favorite Christmas themed romantic comedy is probably Love Actually (2003). No matter how many times I watch it, it never fails to make me feel incredibly sentimental, sappy, joyful and happy. And the cast is absolutely great!
And then there's The Snowman (1982) animation that's one of my very favorite Christmas traditions. I always watch this one on Christmas Eve.
I like The Christmas Card.
ReplyDeleteWell, my favorite is probably A Christmas story, but I've always loved the magic of Miracle on 34th Street and It's a wonderful Life.
ReplyDeleteYes, much sappiness :-) Movie...hm...Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas - not a favorite favorite but i did really like it. And I'm making a list of the ones mentioned here. Yay!
ReplyDeleteI love "White Christmas" and "Christmas in Connecticut" (with Barbara Stanwyck)...nostalgia and comedy...a perfect blend. "Miracle on 34th Street" and "The Bishop's Wife" are also favorites.
ReplyDeleteMy mom always liked "Holiday Affair" with Janet Leigh and Robert Mitchum. "White Christmas" was something of a family tradition growing up and now my husband and I trim our tree and then watch it together every year.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a tie between Christmas Story and It's a Wonderful Life, with Love Actually coming in a close third. :D I guess, though I don't know what category this belongs in, A Charlie Brown Christmas is the memory of my childhood most of all.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Johanna. I love Love Actually !!!! I watch it every Christmas. For some reason, it never goes old on me.

I was a young adult, living alone in a roach-infested studio apartment in Chicago, working at an interesting but dead-end job (i.e., poor), and far from friends and family. Then I met a young man with a huge and oddball family, who took me in around the holidays. So my favorite Christmas movie of all time is "While You Were Sleeping". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3RSYSsgz3w
ReplyDeleteI love It's a Wonderful Life. I feel like all the other Christmas movies I've watched pale in comparison BUT I don't know the movies everyone's mentioned so far. Obviously I don't watch much. Lol. I'll check these movies out. <3
ReplyDeleteTHE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER is my favorite holiday flick. Jimmy Steward and Margaret Sullavan and the rest of the stellar cast are wonderful. Many remakes, (e.g. YOU'VE GOT MAIL) but they all pale in comparison. Have a Merry Christmas, happy holiday, and blessed Yule, everyone. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033045/

Dude, I totally grew up watching Holiday Inn every Christmas! I feel like it's one a lot of people haven't seen. I used to wonder why it was never shown on TV like other holiday films-until I watched it again as an adult and saw the Lincoln's Birthday song... Yikes. Such a shame because otherwise it's such a great little film! Gotta love all Fred Astaire's dancing!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, thanks for the video! :)
Oh, forgot to say, as for favorite movie, it's hard to pick just one: It's a Wonderful Life is the most classic to me, but A Christmas Story is dang close (especially as I grew up about 15 minutes from where it was set)!
ReplyDeleteI also love "The Bishop's Wife" and other favorites are "The Christmas Story", "Miracle on 34th Street" (very progressive for the time period!), and "A Christmas Carol." Favorite TV shoes are Grinch and Charley Brown Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI like The Bishop's Wife, Love Actually, The Shop Around the Corner and It's a Wonderful Life. For a long time an independent cinema near where I live would show It's a Wonderful Life and The Shop Around the Corner as a double feature.
ReplyDeleteMy absolutely favorite Christmas Movie is "Love Actually". It's Brilliant, funny, great cast surprising and one of the first movies I went with my then boyfriend, now husband. "All I want for Christmas, is you" is since then, our theme song. Love it every time I see it again.
