Advent Calendar- Day 15

Teaser by Johanna Ollila
Wow! Here we are on the 15th day of the month. December is half over and the year is nearly gone.

Today we're going to bring back one of our--okay, one of MY--favorite Advent Calendar activities, and that's picking quotes from my books that I can use as teasers.

So maybe this is more a gift to me than to you. :-D It's always so interesting though to see what lines really resonate with readers. Sometimes it's a line I love too and sometimes it's a line I never thought much about. But either they give me something to hang a bit of promo on! I love making teasers, I love matching art to words.

So today's "game" if you will, is to share some of your favorite lines from your favorite JL stories. You can pick any story you like, but if you're looking for inspiration, I don't have any teasers from the first two All's Fair books, or from Strange Fortune or The Darkling Thrush or most of the short stories or the novellas. There's a lot of un-mined teaser territory to choose from.

And the giveaway today are three mugs--they're nice! they're not plastic!--with the Bedknobs and Broomsticks "logo." The winners will be randomly chosen from your submission/comments below.

I'll leave this one open for a bit so that everyone who wants to has time to participate!

  1. I love All's fair series so much, it was second Josh's read after AE. This is not a quote, but I like it.
It's all fun and games, until you find a head in a lake!
I know that wasn't the plot but it sounds perfect ;).

  2. “I want this relationship more than anything.”
Sam said it so simply, so sincerely, it was impossible not to believe him—and Jason wanted to believe him.

  3. “Two Irish cops walk into a bar. The first cop says...” Rick’s voice dropped. He said gruffly, “I love you. Come home.”
Keir managed to keep his voice steady. “What’s the other cop say?”
The sweetness of Rick’s smile was like a kick in his chest. “That’s what I’m here to find out, boyo.”

  4. Perry’s kisses were sweet and urgent, and Nick returned them deeply, passionately. Once upon a time kisses--when they happened at all--had been mostly ritual and routine. Now they were an end to themselves, a pleasant way to spend a few minutes, a few hours, even an evening.

  5. My fave snippets from Fair Game, because they include action/mystery AND implicit I-love-you's:

"I got a weird feeling. I think I'm being watched."
There was a short, sharp silence before Tucker drawled, "You're probably giving campus security the most fun they've had in months."
"Yeah, probably. What are the odds, right?" Elliot kept moving--and kept an eye on the unmoving shadows falling further behind him.
"Are you on the way to your car?"
    "Yes."
    "Stay on the line."

"It would be pretty stupid to try to grab his ex-boyfriend. Besides, I think Kyle would have recognized him, ski mask or not."
    "It was dark."
"I'd know you in the dark, Tucker."
Tucker's eyes flashed up to meet Elliot's. He said curtly: "Yeah, I'd know you too."

My very favourite scene is the one in which they talk about their communication problems the night after the shooting, but that's just too long to quote in its entirety, haha.

  6. So hard to choose between favorite quotes!
Fair Game 1: That breach of flesh always astonished him.It wasn't only physical, that letting someone inside. Physical was the easy part.
Fair Game 2: Tucker reached over, finding Elliot's hand, bringing it to his mouth and kissing his knuckles. "Can we not talk about serial killers before bed?"

    1. I love that "Fair Play" one, the "Can we not talk about serial killers before bed?" quote.

  7. I could write down a lot of sad and poetic quotes. But to stay in th Holiday spirit, I'll go with one from "the Dickens with love", because for it sums up what love can be.

"I want you to have it. I wanted you to have something you didn't believe you could ever have."

  8. "I've always been grateful - even when I was married, even when I thought it was over between us - that it was you I fell in love with." Jake to Adrien, "The Dark Tide." ❤❤

  9. This one is edited for brevity:

"First time I saw you," Cowboy said, "I thought ..." He laughed softly.
    "What did you think?"
Cowboy said reminiscently, "I thought you were cute as a newborn foal."
    "Cute?" Bat was truly apalled.
"Sure. Tall and quiet and sort of shy."
    "Shy?"
"Well. The fact is, I mistook your natural limey repression for something else."
    Bat muttered, "Ridiculous."

  10. Oh no, I don't think my comment went through last night! *headdesk* I'm going to post anyway because I really love these lines!
Fair Play: That breach of flesh always astonished him. It wasn't only physical, that letting someone inside. Physical was the easy part.
Fair Game: Tucker reached over, finding Elliot's hand, bringing it to his mouth and kissing his knuckles. "Can we not talk about serial killers before bed?" XD

  11. Aleister tasted extraordinary. Smoky and sweet. Like blue shadows on snow and the glistening amber heart of fire. It was intoxicating, and Strange remembered wives’ tales and warnings about the temptations of witches - and their voracious carnal appetites.

    One could but hope.

  12. Time and tide. Love had its own circadian rhythms, and it was beginning to look like he and Max had missed their chance, that they'd slipped into a comfortable somnolence. Perhaps they would continue on indefinitely, but it was all too likely one of these days they were simply going to drift gently, quietly apart
Max and Swift... I love them

  13. I smiled and settled my head next to his on the pillow. The best day of my life, and I’d spent most of it sleeping. But then sleeping with Isaac was still better than doing anything else with somebody else.

  14. From Icecapade:

“The first time I saw a photo of you,” Robert said, “I thought, anyone who looks that innocent has to be wicked as hell. Then I thought, how can I get him to look at me like that?”

  15. As a mother who worries, this hit me hard the first time I read it. Passage too long to quote from Death of a Pirate King. Gist is Adrien wakes in hospital after being shot to see Lisa, no makeup, looking old. He winks at her. Next time he wakes, Lisa in beside the bed immaculately groomed reading Vogue.

  16. "You'll see. I'll be a good husband to you. The best. A good host, a good--"

John grinned. "Sweetheart, I don't care if you're a good husband or not. I love you despite your friends, your family, your cat, and sometimes yourself."

John and Cosmo "Mainly by Moonlight".
