Home Sweet Home

Not much to say this morning beyond THE HOUSE IS OURS!

Thanks to the diligence of our loan officer we signed after-hours on Tuesday evening, the loan funded on Wednesday, and the title was recorded yesterday. Last night we started moving in.

And we are very, very happy.

It even rained yesterday evening. Our first rain in our new home. A good omen if there ever was one.

As happy as we are, I still have a book due, so we'll be working around my writing schedule next week. But for the next two days it is all house all the time. :-)  Today we're measuring for drapes (I don't like blinds in a bedroom) and checking out paint colors (the house has red accent walls and I'm thinking a warm ivory will be more harmonic) and I'll be setting up my office.

The last book I will write in our current house is Winter Kill. And the first book I write in the new house will be Jefferson Blythe, Esquire.

Is it strange that part of how I remember places I've lived is by remembering what books I wrote there?

Part of the purchase price of a new home is the fact that it closes the door on certain avenues. But it also opens a new chapter in your life, and this is something I've been longing for since the start of the year. CHANGE. New directions. So as the extra-wide door swings open on this house, it also swings open on new possibilities.

I am nervous and I am thrilled.

And I am having trouble getting photos of my phone. So I will leave you right here as I go to fill boxes of books and office supplies. So MANY books. :-)

Have a wonderful weekend! And look to your own doorstep.

  1. Congratulations! Such a relief for it to finally be done, and now the fun work of moving in can begin. I can imagine there is a lot to do!

I find it curious that you remember the places you've lived by what you wrote. Sometime I'd love to hear more about that.

    1. I think it's all but impossible for me to disconnect the writer part of my brain.

  2. I am so very, very excited for you, Josh. So many possibilities. So many new beginnings to explore. (new homes are a lot like new stories, aren't they?) I wish you every joy and happiness in your new home. May you have many, many years of warm ivory ahead. :)

  3. I am so, so happy for you. I know that you and SO will have many happy years there. And I would say that in a few months time, you'll forget the hassle it was to get you into that house. Out with the old, in with the new. If you're happy, the writing shows that. I hope you're very, very happy. Muah!

    1. It was a crazy, stressful journey to get to this place, but in the end all that matters is that we did get here. And the house has such a lovely, happy energy to it.

  5. Oh my gosh! Finally! Hearty congratulations and don't hurt yourself trying to get your home organized. We look forward to every new story you will write in your new home, and appreciated all that you have given us in the past. Be well, be happy!

    1. Thank you, Kathleen. As eager as I am to rush full speed into preparing the house and moving in instantly, I know these next weeks have to be a balance of book and house. I'm sure it's a sure sign of what a goof I am that I'm more excited about setting up my office than setting up my kitchen. :-D

  8. My Irish Grandmother's favorite blessing:
May you always have walls for the winds,
a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire,
laughter to cheer you, those you love near you,
and all your heart might desire.

    Congrats on the new home!

    1. It's fun because I've been buying little odds and ends through the years with an eye to this day--and yesterday we started unpacking all these little forgotten boxes. :-D

  10. Now I have this lovely image of you humming happy songs while filling those boxes with endless stacks of books. :-) I couldn't be happier for you two and I'm so looking forward to witness what kind of new opportunities and chapters this new home will bring into your life. It all sounds very promising!

And yes, warm ivory sounds like a good choice! ;-)

Enjoy this fun part of getting a new home, both of you! If I'd live nearer you'd find me behind your door with a paintbrush in my other hand and a champagne bottle in another. Hmm... maybe it's a good thing that I'll have to settle for sending virtual hugs. It might not be a good idea to combine booze and painting... :-D

    2. Heh. :-D Well, I've heard that siblings, nieces and nephews come real handy at times like these... ;-) Or at least the distance you have to drag THEM is not as long as in my case... LOL.

  11. //Last night we started moving in//: that was quick, but I can imagine that you would be in a hurry. I share your joy. I'm glad all turned out well for you.

Enjoy the new house and remember you don't have to do everything at once!

    1. You know, that's not so easy to remember! Especially since now I must put all house stuff aside to finish this book. But it will all get done. And the fact that I believe that proves I have made some progress! ;-D

  12. I'm so pleased that this has finally come together, and you're moving in already! I agree that ivory walls will be better than red:) I'm reminded of the the beginning of The Boy With the Painful Tattoo, and I hope your new home is as lovely as the one Kit and JX moved into, and that all your china arrives intact.

  17. Congratulations to you and your SO! I'm so happy and excited for both of you and I try to picture you packing boxes with books and humming happily. I think that ivory walls look great. They would be a lovely background for a painting by Allan P. Friedlander?

    1. I'm happy to say there is a LOT of wall space. I also have a lot of art I'd forgotten about because it's been packed away for so long. So yesterday was quite a discovery.

  25. Josh - Congrats to you and the SO on your new home. There will be no end of upkeep projects to distract you. But it's worth it. Good luck with the inherited appliances. Earlier this year I replaced a 50's era stove I inherited. Glad the place came with a pool: you can just go out there and soak. Any ghosts?
