This Probably Means Something…

I had a dream last night.

I was traveling across country (which I don’t do much anymore) and my flight was delayed and I had to spend the night in the airport. Except that the airport was sort of a combination of an airport and a museum (too many episodes of Sister Wendy, I know). It had a lot of natural science and natural history exhibits (which I love) with those enormous stuffed animal displays and giant windows offering incredible views of the stars and planets.

When I woke in the morning I was running through the museum to catch my plane and as I looked out the windows the scenery was so incredible that I had to stop and stare. And then I thought…I want to remember this forever. I should take a photo. If only I had my camera! And then I realized my phone was a camera too! So I reached for my iPhone and it fell apart in my hand.

I tried and tried, but I couldn’t seem to figure out how to put it back together. So I went looking for someone to help me fix my phone. Everyone kept trying, but when I would take the phone back it would fall apart again. It had all these cardboard pieces and washers and nuts and plastic inserts that just didn’t make any sense to me.

(Ya think, Josh?)

OH. And I ran into Ginn Hale and Nicole Kimberling who were (this part still gets me laughing when I remember) traveling with a theatrical troop of little people who were putting on performances of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. They were all in costume. Including Ginn and Nicole.  Lots of red velvet and breeches.

Anyway, they couldn’t fix my phone either.

So I finally I was left standing at the window staring at this breathtaking scenery with my broken phone in hand, trying to memorize everything I was seeing.

  1. Maybe you just need to stop and observe the beauty of life. Commit it to memory before the moment passes.

Or, your phone is about to die and you need to make sure your insurance is current.

  2. No more late night snacking for you!
    Love the theater troupe.

  3. Ha! I'm thinking, yes, this probably DOES mean something — that it's good you will be on vacation soon. Sounds like it's right about that time for you. Relax and enjoy, Josh. :)

  4. Perhaps it's a warning about relying so much on technology that we forget to just look and enjoy. Or maybe you're starting to work too hard again!

    1. That could be. Maybe it's a reflection of my fear of being at the mercy of technology!

  5. And in the dream did you miss your plane too? I would have dumped the weird phone pieces in my carry-on and rushed to catch my plane. Of course I take lousy pictures so nothing would have in any way captured the view--and no way would I miss my flight and spend another night in the airport. Can you tell how much I hate to fly? Oh, and who was costumed as Snow White--Ginn or Nicole?

  6. I did seem to forget all about my plane!

Ha! Ginn and Nicole were dressed like hunstmen!

  7. Don't you just love the way the human mind works? Dreams are fascinating. I think it's your current version of an anxiety dream. A few years ago, I finally stopped having my university/law school anxiety dream (it's time for exam or time to graduate, but I didn't go to class/don't know the material/didn't write the paper)and started having the travel-themed anxiety dream. But I have NO IDEA what Ginn and Nicole dressed as huntsmen with SW and the dwarfs mean! :-)

    1. I have to say I prefer this dream to the dream where I am wandering the halls of an unfamiliar university and showing up after missing months for a final exam.

That is all too much like my real college experience. ;-D

  8. That was a beautiful, vivid dream. I agree with the comments about it being an anxiety dream but I love that your dream gave you something beautiful as well.

    1. Yes! I feel the same. Given that I am always anxious, I don't put that much weight on that piece of the dream. What stayed with me was the sense of change and beautiful things.

Well, and the traveling midgets, but...

  9. Whenever i have a dream that has all sorts of seemingly unrelated bits, i like to think back over the days preceding the dream and try to figure out where/what i heard, seen, or talked about.
I'm hoping that Nicole and Ginn are in the dream because of projects you might be considering ;-) and the rest does seem like just excitement mixed with tech anxiety prior to vacation time. And you have been talking about wanting to visit museums, so there it is. :-)

    1. Yes, I think that's basically it. The bit with Ginn and Nikki makes me laugh, but I think it's because I owe them both an email and that little concern popped up in the middle of the dream.

I must say they did look rather fetching in their huntsmen garb. :-D

  10. Have you found your camera so you can have it handy on your travels? I take pictures with my camera and then wish I had used my iPhone so I can share them immediately. Happy travels!

    1. I do have my camera, but I want to travel light, so I may just opt for using my phone. It's not like I'll be taking art photos. I just want a visual prompt so I can remember what I need to remember.

  11. I'm just amazed at how well you remember it all! I have quite detailed dreams, I know, but I forget them very quickly.

Have you downloaded your photos from your iPhone to your computer?

    1. Funny you should mention that. I had an iphone die on me a few months ago, and I thought I had lost all my photos. But it turned out I had downloaded them into a file on my laptop at some point. I must have had a moment of caution -- so rare that I didn't remember it until I stumbled over the file.

Needless to say, I was very happy.

  12. I was about to say the same as Helena. I'm impressed you can remember your dream because I just wake up with feelings and struggle to think what's caused them.

But anyway, take your camera on holiday with you :)

    1. I usually don't remember. But then I think most of my dreams are probably pretty boring. The usual confused rehashing of current events.

I did once dream my editor and I were driving off a giant waterfall. :-D That's one dream I remember vividly.

  13. Sorry everyone else seems to be so much more helpful than I am. I read your post and thought "Wow, last time I had a bizarre dream that I remembered this vividly, I was pregnant." now I'm pretty sure we both know that's not your problem.

Whatever your mind is trying to tell you, it will get through to you with the message when it needs you to know. In the meantime relax and enjoy the beautiful things you saw in your dream.

    1. Thinking of the dream makes me laugh, so it wasn't too stressful anyway.

Relax and enjoy the beautiful things is very good advice, I think.

  14. If I ever get stranded on an airport I hope it will be on this one! That was great :D

  15. I don't know whether it is because I am using Firefox, but the font is so small, even when I keep expanding it, that I could not read it.
