Weirdly, this time I have tons of ideas for projects (whereas the last time I felt numb). This time it's more a feeling of being pulled in too many directions, pressured into writing before I was sure what to write--and of course the horrible feeling of always running miles behind where I needed to be. It was overwhelming.

Josh Lanyonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11944091956589831656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1411894864312049426.post-35220592239902065522018-01-23T16:34:59.323-08:002018-01-23T16:34:59.323-08:00I'm glad! It's embarrassing and painful to miss a deadline.

Unfortunately, once a book is listed, there is no taking it down without creating much greater problems than reader disappointment.

Maybe the best thing in this case is to just push all the dates to December 2018.

Josh Lanyonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11944091956589831656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1411894864312049426.post-31944254266953555692018-01-23T16:23:00.930-08:002018-01-23T16:23:00.930-08:00Thank you so much, Ariel. :-)Thank you so much, Ariel. :-)Josh Lanyonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11944091956589831656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1411894864312049426.post-31273628611831986112018-01-23T16:21:53.310-08:002018-01-23T16:21:53.310-08:00I'm so glad, Judy. I used to mind map. I used to jump from project to project. I used to take all the research time I needed. I used to have fun outlining and making character notes and really thinking about the story before I ever began writing. I miss that piece. I think I began to streamline a lot of what I loved about writing right out of the process! It's almost a physical relief to give myself permission to work that way again. It's not ideal--or necessary--but it's doable. From the moment I realized that, I understood that I could make the decisions I needed to in order to ensure a much more creative and productive future.

My setting extreme and artificial goals is a major part of the problem! Publishing has changed so much and I started to get swept up in this idea that if I didn't have new books out every month I would be instantly forgotten. But the I-need-a-new-book-every-audience is not my audience anyway. My audience expects certain things from a JL book--and so do I! That creative process is why I wanted to become a writer in the first place. That slow, painful process is--in a weird way--what makes the end product so satisfying.
